HAPPY BIRTHDAY = Free bottles of wine!!!

This year marks our 20th anniversary of selling wine at Roscoff. We were the first wine outlet in the area and are, we like to think, the best. We want you to benefit from our success so that is why, if you buy 12 bottles of the same wine we will give you a 13th free of charge! (of the same wine).

"Hi, we bought about 10 half cases of wine from you about 10 days ago. I
just wanted to let you know that this is the best wine buy we have made
in many trips to France over several years. Have tried about 8 different
wines so far. The price/quality ratio is exceptional - many thanks. We
will see you again next time  we are in Roscoff."

"My advice is to be very careful where you buy. We go to Roscoff three or four times a year and have tried all the wine outlets. We used to be attracted to the `booze cruise` places at Roscoff, but soon realised that most of them buy simply on price and don`t care for the quality. We feel that what is the point of saving say, 50 centimes, only to go home with something which is disappointing. Compared to prices here that extra 50 centimes is money well spent! Some of the large supermarkets can be good especially if you fall upon a special offer, (try Super U at St. Pol de Leon) but of course, you can`t taste, buy in large quantities, or speak English."

"Roscoff`s Wine Seller isn`t the cheapest, and doesn`t pretend to be, but they sell a better quality, and of course you can taste. Last year we bought a medal winning Merlot for about 3 euros, nectar in a bottle! We`re off to stock up for Christmas on the next cheap crossing. We will look at the other `booze cruise`places, but probably will go for the higher quality at the port, at the Wine Seller."

and another...

"The best option remains buying from the producer if you have the time to do the research and legwork. A friend bought some terrible wine in the Wine and Beer shop just outside Roscoff (against my advice) and I always call in when passing to see if they have bargains. Most of what they sell is terrible stuff. the only thing I have ever bought there was a 5ltr bottle of Ch. Tannesse 1995 which was great value (around 33 quid) and looked great at a party I had in 2003. I promise to visit Roscoff Wine Seller later this year if I get the chance. From their contributions to this page they do seem to genuinely care about what they sell (unlike their rivals) and this really does count for something in France (supermarkets, for example, couldn`t care less 99 per cent of the time)....

and yet another...

Having too, just come back from Roscoff and having seen Leslie's comments re: the winewarehouses at the ports, I agree with him that the selection from most of them is terrible. They all seem filled with "Calais" type wine ie. JP Chenet, Gallo, Piat d'Or etc.
I think the problem is that the majority of these wines are not imported directly into France, but are imported into England, then exported to Calais and on to other ports, a distance of about 8 hours from Roscoff so really the transport costs almost wipe out any price saving.
Although I'm not in favour of promoting any outlet I must say that the selection offered by Roscoff's Wine Seller (at the port) is well above the rest. We found a superb selection of property bottled French wines, all incredibly interesting and very good value for money. We will be returning!

BEING ENGLISH, WE ARE CONSTANTLY ASKED IF WE KNOW OF A COTTAGE TO RENT FOR HOLIDAYS. NORMALLY WE DON`T SUGGEST ANY, AS THE ONES WE HAVE SEEN HAVE NOT BEEN SUITABLE. AT LAST WE HAVE COME ACROSS ONE WHICH IS PERFECT AND WE CAN RECOMMEND IT IN FULL CONFIDENCE.

IT IS SITUATED CLOSE TO PONTIVY.
